November 2003

November. The weather wasn´t great this november with a lot of grey and foggy weekends. During the week, when I have to work, it was mostly fine with a lot of sunshine.

I got my D1 back from repair. They changed the shutter because it was defective.

November isn´t the best time to shoot pictures. The leafes are gone and if there is no snow it makes no sense to go out and take some landscapeshots ( well, only if you like to show how grey it is ). But November is also the time to take images at bird feeders as traffic there increases when the days become colder. The tricky thing is to not include the feeder in the image. One way is to capture the bird on his favourite landing perch near the feeder. In this case this was not possible because the branch was 3 meters high. To shoot in the sky on an overcast day isn´t really a good idea. So I had to wait till he climbed down to my eyelevel. I was only able to take three shots ( with just one in sharp focus ) before he flew away. I took a lot of shots at the feeder to but I don´t like them because of the feeder. By the way I didn´t attach the bird on the tree with the metalring - this was the ring that holds the feeder.

Taking pictures of birds with a medium zoom is fun. If you don´t use a TC you have to be very close: somewhere between 1.80 to 3 meters to get useable results. That´s what I call closeup birding.
